Do non-expected utility choice patterns spring from hazy preferences? An experimental study of choice ‘errors’

چکیده

Individuals often have only incompletely known preferences when choosing between pair-wise gambles. Particular presentations of the choice problem may then passively encourage the use of some choice method to clarify the preference. Different presentational displays can then lead to choice patterns predicted by one or other Generalised Expected Utility theory. When a preference is not or cannot be constructed, choices will be arbitrary. I run an experiment that uses three different presentational displays and incorporates a ‘strength of preference indicator’. The experiment investigates regret theory as an example of a Generalised Expected Utility theory. As preference strength is found to vary by display, regret effects, event-splitting effects and choice reversals are all found to be display dependent. It is suggested that the evidence is best explained by assuming incomplete EU preferences which are clarified by constructive heuristics, rather than some Generalised Expected Utility model coupled with an error term. ©2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Rational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration

Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

On Calibration and Application of Logit-Based Stochastic Traffic Assignment Models

There is a growing recognition that discrete choice models are capable of providing a more realistic picture of route choice behavior. In particular, influential factors other than travel time that are found to affect the choice of route trigger the application of random utility models in the route choice literature. This paper focuses on path-based, logit-type stochastic route choice models, i...

Using Discrete Choice Experiment to Determine Willingness to Pay for Medicine Interferon-Beta by Multiple Sclerosis Patients

This study explores the effects of Interferon-β characteristics such as country of origin, injection frequency and method, monthly cost, efficacy, and side effects on multiple-sclerosis patients’ willingness to pay. For this purpose, MS patients with a history of using Interferon-β were studied from the three major Isfahan MS centers. Choice sets were designed with a combination of attributes a...

Recovering Risk Preferences

The work proposed here will develop experimental methods and tools for the analysis of behavior under uncertainty in economically important settings. The research is motivated by types of questions commonly asked in demand analysis: (i) Consistency. Is behavior under conditions of uncertainty consistent with a model of utility maximization? (ii) Structure. Is the observed data consistent with a...

Consistent dynamic choice and non-expected utility preferences

This paper studies the application of the two most popular non-expected utility (NEU) models -Choquet Expected Utility (CEU) and Maximin Expected Utility (CEU)to dynamic choice situations in a purely subjective framework. We give an appropriate version of the reduction of compound acts axiom, that states the equivalence between a static and a dynamic choice situation. We show that if consequent...
